A Coco Gauff and Serena Williams doubles partnership could be coming this season.

After doubles specialists Erin Routliffe and Giuliana Olmos scored a 6-4, 6-4 sweep of Karolina Muchova and Serena Williams in the Berlin Tennis Open doubles opener on Tuesday, Williams shared she considered asking Gauff to play doubles on the German lawn.

“I would really love to play with Coco,” Williams said after the second doubles match of her comeback on Tuesday. “To be honest, she was on my list of people that I would love to play with. I should have done better research on who was on the charts, but Karolina is such a great player.

“She’s such a beautiful player, and she’s someone that I love to watch.”

Informed that 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena wants to join forces, Gauff said she’s “very excited” to partner the four-time Olympic gold-medal champion one day.

“Yeah, she [Serena] is definitely one of the main reasons why I decided to play tennis, for sure,” Gauff said in Berlin. “Yeah, it’d be really cool. I’m hoping that one day she’ll hit up my line to play doubles. That would be really, really cool.

“And if she were to compete in singles, it would be cool to step on the court with her just because she’s a legend and someone I looked up to. I’m very excited to be in the same spaces as her again.”

The 44-year-old Serena Williams, who will partner 46-year-old sister Venus Williams in this month’s Wimbledon doubles, suggested she will ask Gauff to play in the future.

“I love watching Coco as well,” Serena Williams said. “Now that I know that [she’s available to play] — and she’s so focused on singles nowadays. I guess I should have asked, though. I didn’t know.”
