Lingering injury has forced Emma Raducanu out of Wimbledon.

The British No. 1 withdrew from Wimbledon on Sunday night due to a stress fracture in her lower right leg.

“I’ve done everything possible to try to get to the start line but after a final scan tonight the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture,” Raducanu said. “I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing through.”

The 2021 US Open champion Raducanu joins British compatriot Sonay Kartal, who withdrew before the tournament began.

Raducanu, who cancelled her scheduled Thursday and Friday practice session in an effort to rest her leg, has reached the round of 16 in two of her four Wimbledon appearances. Last year, Raducanu lost to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, 7-6(6), 6-3, in the Wimbledon third round.

“Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process,” Raducanu said.

All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton called Raducanu’s absence “devastating.”

“It’s so devastating for players to have to withdraw from a Grand Slam,” Bolton told the media today. “We’re terribly sorry for Emma and we wish her all the best in recovery and really looking forward to see her back on the court next year. It is devastating…

“We have lots of Brits—11 competing today and tomorrow—so if you’re here to watch the Brits on court, there’s lots to see. But terribly sad for Emma.”
