Wearing the Serbian flag on his chest, Novak Djokovic delivered a golden moment for his people capturing the Olympic gold medal in Paris.
Returning to Paris today, Djokovic said he’s empowered representing Serbian people, not the government.
The Grand Slam king has publicly praised Serbia’s student-led political movement, which scored a major victory over Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić’s ruling party last week.
Asked today his reaction to the fact the Vučić regime has criticized and tried to “discredit” him after the 39-year-old Serbian superstar said he plays for his people and hopes for a fresh start for his nation.
“Yeah, look, I’m not gonna discuss or comment on the past. You know, past is past,” Djokovic said. “Hopefully this is a fresh start for the country.
“Yes, I am patriotic, but I have always represented my people and not the government. There is a big difference in that.
“Yeah, so I’m happy with these changes, and hopefully, you know, things will be great and prosperous for our country in the future.”
The 24-time Grand Slam champion’s comments come days after he told the media in Basel he admires the strength, courage and commitment the student movement displayed facing the ruling party and calling for change.
“I’m very happy about this. My deepest respect to the students who fought and showed dignity and resilience,” Djokovic said. “I have lots of admiration for what they’ve done. They managed to create a sense of pride in Serbia and in the world.
“The victory is secure and we all now have hopes that our country will be prosperous and enjoying the future that is coming.”
Last fall, Djokovic moved his family to Greece amid growing political tensions in his native Serbia. The 10-time Australian Open champion has also owned a home in Spain for years.
