Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the second-ranked Spanish man behind world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.

World No. 18 Davidovich Fokina was bypassed for a spot on the Spanish Davis Cup squad and said that decision rests solely on the shoulders of captain David Ferrer.

“It was a decision by captain David Ferrer and I respect it,” Davidovich Fokina told MARCA. “Obviously, I would have loved to be on the list representing my country, but this time he has decided to have other players.

“David called me a week ago to tell me that he would not count on me on the first list. Before that call I had already told him to count on me. For me it will always be a pride to represent Spain, but in the end it was his decision and I accepted it.”

Still, as second-highest ranked Spanish man, Davidovich Fokina said he believes he deserved a spot on the squad.

“Being number 18 in the world, I think I deserved to be among the four best players in my country, with all respect to my teammates, who as I said are great players too,” Davidovich Fokina told MARCA. “Now, my goal is to focus on the rest of the season and prepare to reach the top level next year.”

The Alcaraz-led Spanish squad is bidding for its seventh Davis Cup championship.
