Back Surgery Knocks Korda Out of US Open

Sebastian Korda will be watching the US Open from the couch this month.

Former world No. 15 Korda, who underwent back surgery last week, officially withdrew from the US Open as he recovers from back surgery.

Korda and Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu have withdrawn from the US Open singles main draws, tournament officials announced today.

Korda posted this post-surgery photo with his doctor on social media.

“It’s been 4 months off-court managing pain in my back with a lot of pressure on my sciatica,” Korda wrote on Instagram. “After different treatments we decided to have a swift surgery that has finally relieved the pain. What a relief.

“Massive thank you to Dr. Qureshi and his team.

“Now it is time to recover, heal and get back to work. Thanks everyone for the support. See ya’ll soon!”

Injury-induced inactivity has seen Korda’s ranking drop to No. 50. Korda, who has posted a 12-6 record this season, has not played since his round of 16 run at the Miami Open in March as the back injury shut down his season.

Though Korda excels on hard courts, his 2-6 Flushing Meadows record, including four first-round exits, is his worst performance at any of the four Slams as he’s battled injury in recent years.

Aleksander Vukic (AUS) moves into the men’s main draw in Korda’s spot. Elsa Jacquemot (FRA) moves into the women’s main draw in place of Begu.

Benjamin Bonzi (FRA) and Anna Blinkova are the first players out of the respective main draws.
