The curtains closed on the legendary career of Germany’s Angelique Kerber on Wednesday in Paris, as the three-time major champion fell in a heated battle to China’s Zheng Qinwen, 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(6).
At 36, Kerber was playing her final tournament as a professional, having announced her decision to retire after the Olympics. She went out with a charge, winning three rounds to become the oldest woman to reach an Olympic women’s singles quarterfinals since tennis returned to the Olympic Games in 1988.
