During Sunday’s dramatic comeback against Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel, Andy Murray was already contemplating flights back home to the UK. An illustrious career, ending in a first-round doubles loss at the Olympics?
Think again… .
The unthinkable happened as Murray and his partner Dan Evans saved five match points in succession and climbed back from 9-4 down in the match tiebreak to defeat the Japanese tandem 2-6, 7-6(5), 11-9.
Two days later, as he and Evans faced a pair of match points against Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen in the second round, Murray was in similar headspace. His legendary career hanging in the balance, it seemed that his luck may have run out. Cue more Murray magic…
The British duo rallied from the brink once again, defeating the Belgian duo 6-3, 6-7(8), 11-9 to reach the quarterfinals.
Murray and Evans locked down four consecutive points from 9-7 down in the match tiebreak, keeping the two-time Olympic gold medalist in singles alive in the doubles dance for at least one more round.
The 37-year-old and his 34-year-old partner will continue their quest against either Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul or Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer next.
