2021 champion Alexander Zverev was boxed out of the Acapulco draw at the first hurdle on Tuesday night. The German fell to compatriot Daniel Altmaier, a smooth-striking 25-year-old with a one-handed backhand that took the play to the top seed for most of the evening.
Altmaier’s 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 triumph marked his first win over Zverev in three tries, and his first career Top-10 win on a hard court. Sixth-ranked Zverev falls to 13-4 on the season.
Altmaier, ranked 57, hit 13 forehand winners and saved six of seven break points to notch the biggest win of his career by ranking.
He will face Miomir Kecmanovic in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
For the rest of the seeds in action on Tuesday in Acapulco, it was a good day.
