Andy Murray's dream of making a deep run at a Slam once again will have to wait – it’s Taro Daniel’s turn. The 28-year-old qualifier moved past Murray, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Day 4 at Melbourne park, as he hit 46 winners against 21 unforced errors and saved nine of 11 break points against the five-time runner-up.
Murray, who defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in give grueling sets in the first round, had never lost to a player ranked outside of the Top-100 at a major. The Scot won a match at the Australian Open for the first time since 2017, and moved into sole possession of fifth place on the Australian Open's all-time Open Era win list this week.
Daniel will face either Jannik Sinner or Steve Johnson in the third round.
