A consummate pro, Marcos Giron leaves no stone unturned in his quest to get the most out of his game.
Not the biggest or most powerful player on tour, he is crafty, consistent and persistent, and on Wednesday night he used all of those qualities as he edged past World No.6 Holger Rune for his biggest career win, 6-2 4-6 6-3.
Giron made the most of his opportunities, taking advantage of a less than stellar night from the 20-year-old Dane that featured 50 unforced errors, and got over the line in two hours and six minutes.
Rune drops to 37-14 on the season, while Giron improves to 18-19.
Giron built a 5-2 lead in the final set, and finally clinched with a break in the ninth game after failing to serve it out.
"I've played with a lot of guys who are Top 10 in the world so I knew that I can do it,” Giron, who improved to 2-15 lifetime against the Top 10, said. “I knew that the level is there. But the margins are so small and you never know when that break is going to happen... So you always have to be there.”
Giron will face fellow American Tommy Paul in the round of 16 on Thursday.
A Good Day for UCLA
Giron, the 2014 NCAA men’s singles champion, was joined by Mackenzie McDonald, the 2016 NCAA men’s singles champion, in the winner’s circle on Wednesday. McDonald defeated No.6-seeded Andrey Rublev, 6-4, 6-3.
McDonald will face Milos Raonic in round of 16 action on Thursday.
Four Americans have reached the round of 16 in Toronton – Giron, McDonald, Paul and Taylor Fritz, who edged Ugo Humbert on Wednesday, 7-6(7) 3-6 6-3.
Fritz will face Australia’s Alex de Minaur on Thursday.
