Marcos Giron saved a match point and sent top-seeded Taylor Fritz packing at the Dallas Open, the 28-year-old World No.70 rallying for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3) triumph to set a semifinal with 21-year-old Jenson Brooksby.
Giron, coming off a 2021 season that saw him win a personal best 23 wins, reaches his second ATP semifinal.
He rallied from 4-2 down in the third and saved a match point with Fritz serving at 5-4 – Giron eventually broke on his fourth break point, then saved a break point to force a tiebreak. In the breaker, he jumped out to a 3-1 lead and never looked back.
Brooksby blasted past Australia’s Jordan Thompson, 6-3, 6-0 to improve to 4-0 lifetime in ATP quarterfinals. The American is playing his first ATP event of 2022. He missed the Australian Open due to Covid-19 and reached the semis of the Columbus challenger a few weeks ago.
Neither Brooksby nor Giron has ever played an ATP final.
