The 21-year-old Potapova powered into her second straight semifinal a week after she reached the final four in Lausanne. The victory vaults Potapova to a new career-high ranking of No. 57 in the live rankings.
It is Potapova's third semifinal of the season—all on red clay.
Last April, Potapova played through qualifying to capture her maiden WTA title in Istanbul.
Tomorrow, Potapova will play world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit for a spot in the Hamburg final.
The top-seeded Kontaveit led her quarterfinal 6-0, 2-0 when eighth-seeded German Andrea Petkovic retired from their match.
American Bernarda Pera continued her torrid tear.
The left-handed Pera pounded out a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wimbledon doubles champion Katerina Siniakova to charge into her second straight semifinal.
It is the 10th straight win for Pera, including two qualifying victories en route to her first WTA title in Budapest last week. All 10 of Pera's wins have come in straight sets.
A streaking Pera has risen to No. 65 in the live rankings. Pera will play Maryna Zanevska for a place in the final.
The seventh-seeded Zanevska broke in the final game of both sets beating fourth-seeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-4, 7-5.
