Sebastian Baez stopped Dominic Thiem's run in Bastad, edging the resurgent Austrian in three sets.

Dominic Thiem’s comeback week in Bastad has come to an end.

The Austrian played well but wasn’t able to deliver another victory on Friday as he fell to 21-year-old Argentinian Sebastian Baez in three sets, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4.

It has been a highly successful week for Thiem, however. The former World No.3 snapped a 10-match losing streak on the ATP tour, recording his first wins in 14 months, as he reached the quarterfinals.

Thiem, who had been off the tour from July of 2021 to late March of this season due to wrist and hand injuries, played three three-setters and acquitted himself nicely on all fronts.

He saved match point to prolong today’s contest but Baez came good in the decider, notching the pivotal break for 3-2 and saving two break points later in the set to prevail.

Baez, this year’s Estoril champion, is into his third ATP semifinal of his year. The Buenos Aires native had just three ATP wins to his name prior to 2022, but he has delivered 24 already this season – including 20 on the clay.

Baez will face Andrey Rublev in the semis.

The top-half semifinal will feature Francisco Cerundolo and Pablo Carreno Busta.
