Sebastian Baez entered this year’s Cordoba Open in cold form – the Argentinian had lost 18 of his previous 19 matches – but he leaves red hot.
Baez completed his second ATP title run on Sunday, edging out his compatriot Federico Coria 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Baez has been in exceptional form all week, as he notched victories over Luciano Darderi, Marcelo Barrios Vera, Hugo Dellien and Coria, using his booming groundstrokes off of both wings to great effect, and taking the net when the situation called for it.
He was dominant in the opening set against Coria on Sunday, before letting his momentum slip as the 30-year-old hit back to gain the upper hand in set two.
After a trade of breaks in the third, Baez turned up the volume on his game and reeled off three games to take the score from 2-2 to 5-2. Coria held serve at love to stay alive but Baez had no trouble serving out the victory in the next game.
He had a warm handshake with Coria before he burst into celebration with his team.
Coria, who battled through an ankle injury to defeat defending champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Saturday, drops to 0-2 in ATP finals.
Nevertheless he will rise 18 spots to make his Top-50 debut in the ATP rankings on Monday, at No.48.
Baez improves to 2-2 and will rise 11 spots to 36 in the rankings on Monday.
