Sebastian Korda made the best of some extremely difficult conditions at the Delray Beach Open on Wednesday night. With winds swirling and veteran Andreas Seppi wreaking havoc, Korda steadied himself and pushed through to earn a straight-sets victory, 7-5, 6-3 over the 37-year-old.
“Just tried to put the ball in the court,” Korda said on court after his win. “It was brutal. Just super happy with the way I closed it out.”
The 21-year-old American, ranked 43 and seeded fifth, trailed by a break twice in the opening set but both times rallied back to level immediately. He converted his second break point of the game to level at 5-all, then broke the Italian in the final game of the opening set, rallying back from 40-15, saving a total of four game points before converting the critical break point.
Korda rolled out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and never relinquished his advantage, but he did have to save a break point in the final game, while serving at 5-3, before converting his fourth match point.
Korda saved all seven break points he faced in the second set.
The American will face either top-seeded Cameron Norrie or Oscar Otte in the quarterfinals on Friday.
