The sun, the sand… the win!
Mike and Bob Bryan rode off into to the Davis Cup sunset with yet another tie-clinching victory on Saturday to propel Team USA into this November’s 2020 Davis Cup Finals in Madrid.
The Bryans, the all-time doubles team win leaders in USA Davis Cup history, improved to 25-5 as a tandem at the competition and they have never lost a Davis Cup rubber on the road after their 6-3 6-4 victory over Sanjev Fayziev and Denis Istomin on Saturday.
"We came out hot," Bob Bryan told reporters after the match. "We didn't miss any returns. Got on them early."
"We really wanted to come out and play a great match in our last match, and I thought we did," added Mike. "I thought we both played a high quality match."
The 41-year-old twins came out of retirement at the behest of Captain and friend Mardy Fish to bid a proper farewell to the competition that they dominated ever since they took the court for Team USA in 2003. Mike and Bob would go on to play 16 consecutive ties for the stars and stripes at one point (2003-2008), and Bob competed for a record 14 consecutive seasons in Davis Cup, from 2003 to 2016.
Both twins share the all-time record with 14 seasons of Davis Cup competiton for Team USA.
"So we knew we wanted to treat this like a huge match," Mike said. "We really wanted to perform well on our last Davis Cup match and wanted to clinch. But it's different with the young guys. They are so fun to be around. I think it's just a great crop of guys, all solid dudes. And then playing for Mardy was a blast, having him on the court, seeing him, we have been around for so many years, having one of our peers coach us."
The duo that clinched Team USA’s 32nd and last Davis Cup title over Russia in Portland in 2007 was honored with a video ceremony commemorating their legendary body of work for the sport's biggest team competiton after the match as Fish watched on the verge of tears.
With Team USA's victory, the field for the 2020 Davis Cup finals are now set.
