Serena Williams sent China’s Wang Qiang packing on Day 9 with a scintillating 6-1 6-0 thumping that lasted just 44 minutes.
The six-time champion claims her 100th US Open win in style with a major statement to the rest of the field. She rifled 25 winners against just 10 unforced errors to improve to 13-3 in US Open quarterfinals and move within one win of Chris Evert for the all-time women’s singles win lead.
“It feels like, okay, this is what I've been training for,” Williams said. “This is how hard I've been working. It feels like, you know, hard work pays off when that happens.”
Williams did everything well. She put 25 of 29 returns in play and converted all five break points she saw. Wang had no answers—she finished the match with zero winners and 12 unforced errors.
“The power, like, I cannot handle it,” Wang said. “Just too much for me.”
The 37-year-old will face Elina Svitolina in the semifinals. Svitolina moved into her first US Open semifinal and her second consecutive Grand Slam semifinal with a 6-4 6-4 win over Johanna Konta.
Williams leads Svitolina 4-1 in their head to head.
