Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic claimed the WTA Finals doubles title with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over No.1-ranked Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova.
Babos and Mladenovic take their third title of the season and improve to 2-0 against Siniakova and Krejcikova on the season. Babos wins the title in Singapore for the second straight season—she won the title in 2017 with Andrea Hlavakova.
Babos and Mladenovic notched the critical break in the opening set for 4-3 when Siniakova’s serve was broken.
The Czech duo locked down the WTA’s year-end ranking earlier in the week but they were unable to tame Babos and Mladenovic as they dropped 15 of 23 second-serve points on the day.
After a trade of breaks early in the second set Babos and Mladenovic broke Siniakova for 6-5, and served the title out in the next game, converting their third championship point for the victory.
It was a brilliant season for both teams. Krejcikova and Siniakova won Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back and claimed the WTA’s top ranking for the first time in October. Babos and Mladenovic won the Australian Open and Birmingham titles prior to their triumph in Singapore.
