Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could meet in the round of 16, while Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro could meet in the third round. All four former Grand Slam champions have been drawn into the same quarter of the draw, in addition to Nick Kyrgios (could face either Djokovic or Del Potro in the quarterfinals) and Alexander Zverev (could face Kyrgios in the third round).

Second-seeded Djokovic could face Gastao Elias or Kyle Edmund after his first round bye, while No.9-seeded Federer could face Dudi Sela or Stephane Robert in the second round.

No.6-seeded Nadal will face either Guido Pella or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round, while Del Potro could face Federico Delbonis or Andrey Kuznetsov.

Top-seeded Andy Murray was able to avoid the chaos. The Scot could face a qualifier or Yen-Hsun Lu in the second round, Feliciano Lopez in the third round and No.16-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut in the round of 16 if the seeds hold. Murray is a three-time semifinalist at one-time runner-up at Indian Wells, but he has never won the title.
