The 21-year-old Thiem broke serve seven times dismissing Fognini, 6-3, 6-0, in 56 minutes to power into his sixth career quarterfinal.
Thiem set up an all-Austrian quarterfinal with Gerald Melzer.
Qualifier Melzer held a 4-1 lead over Barcelona runner-up Pablo Andujar when the Spaniard retired with a right hip injury after 27 minutes.
“For sure it was one of my best matches so far this year,” Thiem told ATP World Tour. “I stayed focus from the first to last point. It is really good news for Austrian tennis [to play against Gerald Melzer]. It’s going to be interesting.”
Launching his quest for his first ATP clay-court final, Andy Murray swept German qualifier Mischa Zverev, 6-2, 6-2.
The top-seeded Scot will face Lukas Rosol for a spot in the semifinals. Rosol defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky, 7-5, 6-2.
