Flushing Meadows, NY—Now that he’s taken out World No.1 Daniil Medvedev to reach the US Open quarterfinals for the first time, Nick Kyrgios has a good shot to reach his second consecutive Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows. He will face Russia’s Karen Khachanov, the No.27 seed, in the quarterfinals, and he’s hoping he’ll have two more matches after that. “
"I want to go all the way,” Kyrgios said. “Hopefully it’s possible.”
The Aussie, who defeated top-seeded and top-ranked Medvedev, 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, earns his third career win over a reigning No.1 player.
It his his second victory over Medvedev in as many months.
“I’m just glad I was finally able to show New York my talent,” Kyrgios said. “I haven’t had many good trips here to be honest. I haven’t played great tennis. I’m really glad that I’m able to show you guys the work and the dedication finally – it took me 27 years.”
Medvedev drops to 23-5 lifetime at the US Open. He will lose the No.1 ranking next week to one of three players: Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz or Casper Ruud.
