Muguruza: Change At No. 1 Is Good

US Open champion Angelique Kerber snapped Serena Williams' 186 straight weeks as world No. 1 surpassing Serena for the top spot.

Third-ranked Garbine Muguruza says turnover at the top is good for the game.

"I'm happy that we have a new face in the world number one, not because I have a preference, but just because I think it's good sometimes," Muguruza told the media in Wuhan in comments published by AFP.

Muguruza, who beat Williams in the Roland Garros final to claim her first career Grand Slam title in June, currently trails the 22-time Grand Slam champion by 1,220 points for the No. 2 spot in the rankings.

Williams is skipping the Asian swing to nurse a sore shoulder and suggested she could pull the plug on her season, which would give Muguruza an opportunity overtake her for the No. 2 spot.

Muguruza said Kerber's consistency makes her a worthy world No. 1.

"I think in the woman's tennis, it's hard to find people that (are) always constant," Muguruza said. "Most of the girls are very aggressive. Some days they play good, some days they play bad.

"But I think Kerber is an example this year that she was very all the time there. Every tournament, she's in the last rounds. That's why she became number one."

World No. 5 Simona Halep, who lost to Williams in the US Open quarterfinals, says the decline of Williams' dominance has infused fellow Top 10 players with a greater sense of self belief.

"It's much easier to believe in yourself when you see that Serena is not there any more, like, winning every tournament, being number one in the world for years," Halep said in comments published by AFP. "I feel that everything, it's open now. I feel that everyone has a chance to win a big tournament, to reach the number one. Everyone has a chance to reach the top if we believe. And we started to believe more, I think."
