Sock, Johnson, Querrey, Young Named to U.S. Davis Cup Team

John Isner is the last American man standing in the US Open draw.

The American No. 1 won't be leading the charge when the U.S. team travels to Tashkent to take on host Uzbekistan on red clay in the September 18-20th Davis Cup World Group Playoffs.

Isner has opted out of the tie.

U.S. captain Jim Courier has selected Jack Sock, Steve Johnson, Sam Querrey and Donald Young to the team.

It will be the Davis Cup debut for both Johnson and Sock, who has produced his best results on red clay. Sock won his first career ATP title on the red clay of Houston in April and followed that performance reaching the Roland Garros fourth round where he took a set from reigning champion Rafael Nadal before bowing in four sets.

The 28th-ranked Sock, who is 9-4 on clay this season, is the likely No. 1 singles starter for the Americans. Sock retired from his US Open second-round match due to heat illness and cramping.

Denis Istomin lead Uzbekistan, which is making its eighth appearance in the World Group Playoffs playing for its first trip to the World Group. Istomin has not played Sock previously. The 70th-ranked Istomin has won two of three meetings with the 68th-ranked Young, including a 6-3, 6-3 victory in Winston-Salem earlier this summer.

Young is 1-2 lifetime in Davis Cup competition, with both losses coming to Andy Murray. Young is winless in four clay-court matches this season; he's 5-18 lifetime on clay.

"I mean, this week is awesome. Uzbekistan, it's going to be the same thing where I am playing for the U.S. and we're going to be trying to beat Uzbekistan to get back in the World Group," Young told the media today. "We are going to have our team of support and look to that.  If it's hostile or not, I don't know.  I know it's not like the best place to be going, but I'm excited to be part of the team and get the call and do whatever is needed."

Querrey is 6-5 on clay this season; the 38th-ranked American is 1-7 in Davis Cup matches contested on clay.

Querrey and Johnson defeated the top-seeded Bryan brothers in their US Open doubles opener and followed that up dispatching Fernando Verdasco and Leander Paes in round two.
