Flavia Pennetta shocked the world by winning the US Open on Saturday, 7-6(4), 6-2 over Roberta Vinci. Then the 33-year-old shocked the world again by announcing that she plans to retire.



The Italian won the US Open on her 49th appearance at a major, breaking the all-time record, which was held by Marion Bartoli, who won Wimbledon in 2013 in her 47th appearance at a major.


Though there seemed to be some confusion about when Pennetta will actually hang up her racquets, she told TV reporters after her announcement that this was her last US Open, not her last tournament
