The Frenchwoman’s alluring mix of feathery touch and big-time power were on display for the much of the night, but this show-stopping point early in the second set took the cake. After the match Mladenovic told ESPN’s Pam Shriver that she actually practices the shot. When Shriver asked her if we should expect another one during her quarterfinal with Italy’s Roberta Vinci, Mladenovic jokingly told her to stop putting pressure on her.

Though the Frenchwoman dropped the second set by getting broken in the final game, she showed excellent poise in turning things around in the decider. She was absolutely domininant, winning 28 of 43 points, breaking three times on five opportunities and never facing a break point to earn her first victory over Makarova in three tries.
