World No. 10 Garbine Muguruza will work with Sam Sumyk on a trial basis. This year’s Wimbledon runner-up announced that she had parted ways with her longtime coach Alejo Mancisidor just prior to the U.S. Open. She was mentored by Conchita Martinez in New York, where she lost in the second round to Great Britain’s Johanna Konta.
Sumyk worked with Victoria Azarenka for five years and guided her to two Grand Slam titles and the No. 1 ranking before parting ways with her early this season. He was hired by Eugenie Bouchard shortly thereafter and stuck with the Canadian until early August. Their relationship was largely unproductive, as Sumyk could not help Bouchard find her form--she remained in a much-publicized funk and only won five matches between the Australian Open and the U.S. Open.
After reaching the Wimbledon final, Muguruza has drawn comparisons to Bouchard because she has only won once in four matches since her breakout at SW19. The Spaniard will play Tokyo next week with Sumyk at the helm, joining a stacked field that includes eight top-20 players.
