Tennis fans are all pretty much familiar with the Federer express. It’s one of those classic nicknames, a play on the American overnight delivery and transport company Fed Ex, that fans have always adored – and had fun with.
Now Roger Federer (and Swiss riders) actually has his very own Federer Express, in his hometown of Basel. The 40-year-old took to social media to show off the new train on Friday.
"Thank you for the incredible honor. It feels like just yesterday I was a boy getting to practice everyday on No.8," the former No. 1 and 20-time major champion wrote on Instagram.
The tram is painted with images of Federer and decorated inside and out with statistics and other graphic splashes to give riders the full Federer experience. Some of the seats have even been designed to look like the benches on a tennis court.
"The project was very important to me. That is why it is a great honour for me to be able to see the tram on the streets of Basel in the future," Federer said.
The Swiss recently became the Tourism Ambassador for Switzerland, and also collaborated with American actor Robert Di Niro for a commercial for Swiss tourism.
After a third surgery on his right knee this year, Federer was seen on crutches at Laver Cup in Boston in September. He appears to be walking just fine without them as of today.
