Gael Monfils, as is typically the case, brought his best improvisational chops to the court in Vienna today to face Paolo Lorenzi, and while Monfils’ best was beaten back by the Italian on this point, it was the Frenchman who slid through in straight sets to set up a quarterfinal with Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic.

It’s been an up-and-down campaign from Monfils, highlighted by a final in Marseille and a semifinal in Monte-Carlo, but considering that he has not played since the U.S. Open, he’s looking pretty good in Vienna.
