The often always polite Roger Federer is telling ball kids at the upcoming Australian Open to act a bit naughty next year.
According to Perth Now, the four-time champion in a promotional message for the tournament encouraged the incoming group of 380-plus ball kids from across Australia and Asia to not be shy in asking him for an autograph or a photo.
ATP: Federer Breezes in Basel Opener
“I was a ballkid for two years,” Federer said, “I used to love it…chasing the players down for autographs and for pictures. I’m not sure if you’re allowed to do it, but if you’re not, ask me. I’m totally cool about it.”
Trouble is, it's against the rules.
Tournament rules forbid ball kids from asking players for autographs or pictures while they are working at the event.
Tournament director Craig Tiley is not surprised by Federer's generosity but hopes the ball kids follow the rules.
“As a former ballkid himself, Roger has a soft spot for the kids who do such a great job on court,” Tiley said. It’s no surprise he’s willing to be approached by the kids for a selfie — he’s incredibly generous and always makes time for his fans."
“But with more than 380 in the Australian Open Ballkid Program it might be a little ambitious, and we will rely on their outstanding professionalism to not break any rules.”
Federer is currently competing in his hometown event in Basel, Switzerland.
