Second Serve

Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, something like yesterday’s bizarre racquet-throwing incident at the Charlottesville Challenger reminds us all to expect the unexpected.

Paris Masters: Monfils, Back with a Vengeance, and Tricks up Sleeve

Watch as Darian King of Barbados flies into a rage after losing an important point in the second-set tiebreaker of his first-round match with Great Britain’s Edward Corrie. King whips the racquet into the tarp behind the court, and that in and of itself is bad enough, but his biggest mistake is that he did it in close proximity to the lineswoman, who then tumbles to the court in pain, which results in the disqualification of King, the viral nature of the above video, and a whole lot of debate on nature of the lineswoman’s injury.

The bottom line? Tantrums and officials don’t mix. Whether she was badly injured or not, the fact is that King opened the door for this madness by losing control of his temper in close proximity to an official. Hard-working, low-paid officials do a great service for the game, and they don’t ask for much in return. They deserve respect—end of story.

Just ask David Nalbandian about that
