Kyrgios, Tomic Shunned by Newcombe Award Committee

Though each had stellar seasons on Tour, neither Nick Kyrgios nor Bernard Tomic is on the short list for this year’s prestigious Newcombe Medal. The award was won by Kyrgios in 2014, but according to Linda Pearce of the Sydney Morning Herald, the pair are "Ineligible due to suspension.”

Tomic, who sits at a career-high No. 18 in the rankings, made headlines for his rant against Tennis Australia during Wimbledon. Kyrgios (at a career-high 30 right now) was suspended by the ATP after his infamous “sledging” incident this year in Montreal, though his suspension later turned into a probation.

No matter, Tennis Australia has clearly drawn the line in the sand and has no interest in rewarding on-court achievements that don’t come bundled with the type of sportsmanship and class that the Federation has always embodied.

"They've both clearly had some fantastic results, but the medal is about more than just on court performances,” Newcombe said of Kyrgios and Tomic, according to Pearce.

The six nominees for the Newcombe Medal are Samantha Stosur, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Sam Groth, Casey Dellacqua, John Peers and Dylan Alcott.

The ceremony and gala will be held on November 23rd .
