Sofia Kenin and her dad are back in the groove. The American, who parted ways with her father during the 2021 season, announced today on Instagram that Alex Kenin, her longtime coach, has rejoined her team.
“This year has been a very bumpy road for me,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’m finally back to training and doing what I love! I’m happy to have my dad in my life who has always been there for me through thick and thin. Excited that he’s part of my team and I’m super excited to get back on court competing again next year.”
Kenin had made the switch away from her dad after a tough start to the 2021 season, in the spring. She lost in the second round of her Australian Open title defense.
“Obviously it was a difficult decision,” she said at Rome in May of 2021. “It wasn't easy. I give him credit to everything that he's done. We have had great success together. As I said, it was a difficult decision, but I felt that – you know, we both kind of agreed that it was time to part ways.”
Kenin had surgery to remove her appendix in February, and was bothered by a foot injury this summer. She also contracted covid prior to the US Open and has not played since.
The American finished the 2021 season with an 11-10 record.
