Andy Murray will add Esteban Carril to his coaching team on a trial basis this week at Stockholm, with an eye to bring the Spanish coach on board for 2022.
Best known for coaching Johanna Konta and helping her rise from outside the top 100 to inside the top 10, Carril also had a recent trial period with Emma Raducanu.
Murray owns a 13-12 record at the ATP level in 2021, and still ranks far outside the Top-100 at 144. He will face Norwegian qualifier Viktor Durasovic in the first round at Stockholm, and is slated to face Jannik Sinner, the top seed, in the second round.
Murray peaked at 102 in the rankings this season and has not been ranked inside the Top-100 since June 10, 2018. The three-time Grand Slam champion has been making strides, however. He defeated World No.10 Hubert Hurkacz at Vienna and has notched six Top-50 wins in 2021. But he has not been able to win consistently, and did not reach beyond the quarterfinals at tour-level in 2021.
"It will happen,” Murray said after falling to Carlos Alcaraz in Vienna. “I'm not going to keep losing in the second or third round of tournaments, I will get better, and I will improve and I will break through in one week, or two weeks, or a few months, it will happen. I obviously would just like it to be happening quicker than what it is.”
