Andy Murray is on the short list to be named BBC Sporst Personality of the Year for 2013. Meanwhile, Spain has declared Rafael Nadal its best athlete ... period.
On Tuesday in Madrid, Nadal received the "Legend Award" at Marca's - the local newspaper - silver anniversary shindig. The paper asked its readers to pick Spain's all-time greatest athlete, and Nadal took 25.6% of the vote, easily finishing ahead of five-time Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain (11.6%) and NBA star Pau Gasol (8.6%).
Murray is one of 10 British athletes in contention for the coveted BBC award, and is so much the overwhelming favorite to win it that oddsmakers in the UK have him listed as the 1:50 favorite. Murray won Wimbledon in July, the first UK male to do so since 1936.
Murray finished third in the voting in 2012, the year he broke through to win his first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open. The last tennis player to win the award was Greg Rusedski in 1997.
