Second Serve

Keeping up with the game of tennis, by the numbers. On the eve of first ball at #RG19, let’s preview the men’s singles draw, by the numbers.

86-2

Rafael Nadal’s lifetime record at Roland Garros. The King of Clay enters this year’s tournament bidding for a record 12th major title at the same Grand Slam. He’s also 111-2 lifetime in best-of-five matches on clay. Just two men—Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic—have ever managed to do the unthinkable against Nadal on clay.

4

Number of consecutive Grand Slam crowns that Novak Djokovic hopes to hold at the end of the Paris fortnight. The World No.1 is bidding to become the first man in Open Era history to hold all four majors—twice. Rod Laver has also held all four major titles at the same time twice, but his first time around happened in 1962, long before the Open Era started.

30

Number of years since Michael Chang won the Roland Garros title as a 17-year-old. Chang is the youngest man to ever win a major title. It’s a big year for Roland Garros anniversaries—it’s also the ten-year anniversary of Roger Federer’s one and only title in Paris, and the 20th anniversary of Federer’s first appearance in the main draw.

36

Number of years since a Frenchman claimed the Roland Garros title. What are the chances that Gael Monfils breaks the duck in Paris next week? Before you laugh, consider this: You have to dream it to do it.

8

Number of times that Rafael Nadal has successfully defended the Roland Garros title. That’s just an obscene number. Roland Garros has been defended 17 times in Open Era history, so Nadal can tie the rest of the field’s total of title defenses if he takes the title this year.

69

Number of consecutive Grand Slams that Feliciano Lopez has played. The Spaniard broke Roger Federer’s record for consecutive Grand Slams played and is one of just three players with an active streak of 50 or more consecutive Grand Slams played (Fernando Verdasco and Andreas Seppi).

118

The number of times that the French Open has been held. The first edition of the tournament was held in 1891, solely for French players, but moved to today’s site in 1928.

214-31

The combined record of Rafael Nadal (86-2), Roger Federer (65-16) and Novak Djokovic (63-13) at Roland Garros. The trio are the three most successful ATP players in terms of wins in Roland Garros history.
