We had all assumed that Francesca Schiavone had played Roland Garros for the last time after she fell to Garbiñe Muguruza in straight sets on Monday in Paris, but the 2010 champion says she is leaving the door open and will make a final decision about retirement after the U.S. Open.
“Can be,” she said. “You never know. For the moment I want to live this moment, this year. I have to see how I feel physically. You know it’s not easy to wake up and run again for six hours and push yourself. But we will see I think after U.S. Open I will ask to myself what I want to do.”
The Italian is ranked 78 in the world this week and recently won the Rabat title. She will have a shot at improving that ranking if she can win a few rounds at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open. Schiavone only won one round at Wimbledon last year in addition to reaching a quarterfinal at Nanchang last August. The Italian was one of three former Roland Garros champions in the WTA draw this year. She also reached the final in Paris in 2011.
