Wimbledon banned Ile Nastase last week. Now it is Roland Garros' turn. The tournament announce on its Twitter feed that Mr. Nastase would not be accredited for this year’s French Open.
The Romanian has been widely criticized for racist comments about Serena Williams and his sexist behavior during Romania’s Fed Cup tie with Great Britain on April 22-23. Nastase was removed of his captaincy and forced to leave the venue after the incident. Romania won the tie, 3-2.
Nastase called Wimbledon “small-minded” for banning him.
"His actions were not very good and we condemn them. In terms of an invitation to the Royal Box, he is not going to receive an invitation this year," Wimbledon chairman Philip Brook said.
Nastase did issue an apology for his words in the aftermath of the scandal.
“I know that nothing can really excuse my words, nor a high-level match, not the non-conformist attitude I am now known for, not the unfortunate amplification of the situation,” he said, according to the AP. “My life remains dedicated to tennis and its public and I ask you to accept, as much as is possible, my apologies.”
