Juan Martin del Potro’s first clay-court tournament of 2017 had to be cut short. The 28-year-old had to fly home due to a passing in his family.
“I received the news of the death of my grandfather, and I need to go to my family to be with them during this hard time and say goodbye with them," Del Potro said in a statement. "Thank you Estoril, I will see you soon."
The No.5 seed was to face Ryan Harrison in the second round.
Top-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta (d. Robredo) and No.2-seeded Richard Gasquet (d. Berlocq) reached the quarterfinals on Wednesday, along with Nicolas Almagro and Kevin Anderson.
