Former World No. 7 Belinda Bencic has undergone surgery to her left wrist and will miss a “few months.”
The 20-year-old has seen her ranking drop precipitously in the last 52 week due to a steady stream of injuries. She has gone just 19-28 since the beginning of 2016 and only 1-7 this season, while struggling to overcome injuries to her wrist and back.
Bencic was a breakout star in 2015, when she went 40-20, winning two titles and upsetting then World No.1 Serena Williams in the semifinals at the Rogers Cup.
“It was not an easy decision, but after careful thought and consideration with my team and doctors, we decided that doing it and fixing this problem now would help extend and enhance my career for many years to come,” she wrote on Twitter.
Bencic became the youngest quarterfinalist since Martina Hingis in 1997 at the US Open in 2014. It was just the beginning for the Swiss, who would rise up the rankings and top out at No.7.
