The victory propels Ferrer into a Madrid round of 16 clash with eighth-seeded Tomas Berdych.
The 5'9" Ferrer said the altitude in Madrid elicits a high bounce making it imperative he takes the first strike against the 6'5" Berdych. Ferrer beat Berdych in their last meeting in the 2015 Doha final.
"I think I will have to play aggressively and have a good first serve percentage," Ferrer said. "Whenever I miss my first serve with he's going to step in, and with this court it's very difficult to defend. With the altitude we have here, the short players like me feel it a lot and we have to strike first."
