Navratilova Feeling the Sharapova Void

While the tennis world is still waiting to hear the results of Maria Sharapova’s hearing with the ITF, 18-time major champion is hoping that the waiting ends soon.

"When you have such a superstar missing from your sport it is a loss," Navratilova said on BT Sport. "There is a hole, as there would be if Roger Federer wasn't playing. But let's hope that she can get back on the tour. Some 200 athletes tested positive for the drug. Something's amiss with the communication between the drug people and athletes."

The case has been marred by controversy and a lack of scientific expertise by the anti-doping authorities.

There have been more than 300 positive tests for meldonium this year. In April the ITF released new guidelines about how long the drug could stay in an athlete’s system and admitted that they didn’t fully understand the timelines.

“The fact that WADA felt compelled to issue this unusual statement now is proof of how poorly they handled issues relating to Meldonium in 2015,” Sharapova’s lawyer, John Haggerty wrote in a statement. “Given the fact that scores of athletes have tested positive for taking what previously was a legal product, it's clear WADA did not handle this properly last year and they’re trying to make up for it now.”
