Berdych Parts Ways with Coach Dani Vallverdu
After getting unceremoniously double-bageled by David Goffin at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Tomas Berdych has quickly decided to end his relationship with coach Dani Vallverdu. Berdych's
embarrassing loss marked the first time that a Top-10 player lost a match without winning a game since 2005
.
“My results lately have not been what I expected,” Berdych said in a statement. “As I am not a tennis player at the beginning of his career I have to act quickly when I feel that I need a change." Berdych is undecided about a new coach at the moment.
Berdych is 19-10 on the season with two semifinals to his name.
The 30-year-old is a former Wimbledon finalist that many tabbed a future Grand Slam champion in year’s past. He started working with Vallverdu late in 2014 and got off to a sparkling start in 2015. The Czech worked with Thomas Krupa from 2009 to 2014.
Berdych reached at least the quarterfinals of his first nine events with Vallverdu at the helm and climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 4 last May.
Berdych won a career-best 57 matches last season and has won 50 or more in each of the last five seasons. But he has yet to reach the pinnacle at the Grand Slams, and at 30, the decision is likely centered around that goal.
Berdych had hoped to hire
Ivan Lendl
as his coach but
the pair could never come to an agreement after meeting about the possibility
in 2014.
Berdych, currently ranked 8th, will enter Roland Garros as the No. 8 seed. After reaching the semifinals in Paris in 2010, he has only reached the quarterfinals in one out of five appearances (2014).
