Rafael Nadal headed to Madrid's City Hall on Monday to meet with the mayor Ana Botella and have the nation's capital city name the Mallorcan its adopted son in a formal ceremony.

The award is the highest that the city can bestow upon a Spanish citizen. Previous recipients include Spain's King Juan Carlos, late Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez and late Nobel laureate Camilo Jose Cela.

"You have, Rafa, the admiration and permanent and sincere love of our city," Mayor Botella said during the awards ceremony at city hall.

Nadal, wearing a crisp grey suit, a white spread-collar dress shirt and blue tie, appeared genuinely humbled to receive the honor and share his success with the city. With the the commemorative medal around his neck, he adressed the crowd, before meeting and greeting with officials.
