Video: Novak Djokovic and Ball Boy Steal the Show During Roland Garros Rain Delay
Rain wreaked havoc on the second day of Roland Garros, as completed matches were delayed twice by passing storms and the last matches scheduled on many courts were postponed until Tuesday. While weather delays often breed frustration for the players, fans, officials and tournament staff,
Novak Djokovic
was at the center of a light-hearted moment on Court Philippe Chartrier on Monday.
The World No. 2 was leading
Joao Sousa
of Portugal 6-1, 5-2 when the match was forced into its second delay. That's when the Serbian, sheltered under his hoodie and umbrella, invited the ball boy holding said umbrella to seek shelter under it with him. The boy agreed.
Djokovic first handed him his racket as the two made small talk, and then handed him a bottle of Perrier before grabbing a drink for himself. The two clinked bottles before taking sips, drawing laughter and applause from the (very wet) Chatrier crowd.
When asked about what he and the ball boy talked about, Djokovic said, "We had a nice chat. He's a tennis player, so I asked him how long he's playing, and, you know, how he's enjoying his time as a ball kid."
He continued: "It was a nice, fun time, something unusual for the Grand Slams. But we waited for around 10 minutes in the pouring rain on the court, so I felt there's something I should do and make a new friend. He accepted the offer to sit down, which I didn't think he would do, but he did. So he's very spontaneous little boy, and I hope I see him my next match."
Djokovic went on to win the match 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, and will play Jeremy Chardy in the second round.
