Second Serve

Indian Wells, CaliforniaFrances Tiafoe sometimes has a little too much on his mind.

That was perhaps the case on Friday night, as the American delayed the start of his second-round match with Damir Dzumhur due to the fact that he forgot to pack a critical part of his equipment.

Yes, it has been said that a tennis player is nothing without his racquet. In this case, Tiafoe had to whisper in his opponent’s ear to let him know that play wouldn’t be starting until his coach David Witt had completed his fact-finding mission.

Moments later the magic wands appeared. Tiafoe used his Yonex Percept 97’s – all five of them in fact – to rally past the Bosnian 7-6(4), 7-6(7). The American was down 5-1 in the second set but found a way to get out of trouble and win in straight sets. He will face Yosuke Watanuki of Japan in the third round.
