Second Serve

When Roger Federer gets his backhand rolling, he has the ability to dominate on a hard court like nobody else. He did just that on Saturday, routinely using his backhand to open up the court and to win points outright with winners.

More: Federer, Master Bagel Baker

On this particular point, faced with an attacking Berdych who had taken control of the point, Federer used the backhand for a classic counter punch. He rips a backhand from his ankles to put the Czech back on the defense, and quickly closes, reads the play and bunts a volley past Berdych on the forehand side.

For us, the best part of this shot wasn’t the finishing volley. It was the way that Federer ripped that backhand off of a very well-struck—albeit slightly short—backhand slice from Berdych. The ball was barely ankle high and still Federer put enough mustard on it and hit it to the perfect location to force Berdych into a weak volley.
