Nadal Loves Indian Wells, but Hates the Balls

Rafael Nadal absolutely loves coming to Indian Wells, and is eternally grateful to Larry Ellison for spending megabucks to consistently improve the tournament’s facilities, both for players and fans.

But there’s one thing that ticks the Spaniard off about the place, and he wasn’t shy about chatting about it on Sunday night after his straight-sets win over Igor Sijsling: THE BALLS!

It’s the ball,” he said. “The ball is still not very well, no? Still problem with the same ball. We need to change that, because highest level of tennis deserve highest quality of ball. This ball is not the highest quality.”

Once finished, Nadal was quick to praise the tournament for everything else. He went through a virtual litany of positive checks for the tournament.

“It's unbelievable, everything about what's happening here the last couple of years, the way that the tournament improves, how big is, all the facilities for the crowd, for the players,” he said. “Just can say thanks to all the organization, everybody who makes possible that, to create an event like this. Especially to Larry Ellison. It's great to have him on our tour supporting our sport. It's amazing all the things that's happening here. I think the crowd is one of the highest crowds on the world.”

Nadal also criticized the balls last October at a different tournament in Beijing. At the time he said: “The ball is so bad here. If you throw the ball on the floor, the bounce goes everywhere. Is not a question of winning or losing. I won in Rio (in February of 2014) with this ball. I won tournaments with this ball. It’s just that we’re competing at the top level of our sport, tennis, and the ball is an important thing.

He added: “This week we are playing with one ball. Next week we are playing with a different ball. That’s dangerous for the shoulder, dangerous for the elbow.”
