Tennis took centre stage at the Oscars on Sunday night as Serena and Venus Williams, presenters at the iconic awards ceremony, kicked off the evening by handing things over to Beyoncé, who performed “Be Alive,” her Oscar nominated track from the public courts in Compton.
“King Richard” actor Will Smith took home Best Actor in a Leading Role for his work on the film, adding another notch in the belt of a movie that pays tribute to Richard Williams, Oracene and the Williams sisters' inspiring story. Though it is well known amongst sporting fans of the world, the movie release brought new attention and eyeballs to one of the greatest tennis stories in history. It isn't just a tennis story, however - Venus and Serena's rise to riches provides the blueprint for dreams of young people and parents alike, across the globe.
Even as the controversy surrounding Smith’s altercation with comedian Chris Rock took some of the attention away, there can be no denying that tennis – and the Williams sisters most notably – scored a win on Sunday night in L.A.
