Watch: Del Potro and Tiafoe share classic moment at net


You’ve heard the story about Frances Tiafoe idolizing Juan Martin del Potro, right?

"He was the first pro to every sign a ball for me," Tiafoe said last year. "He's always going to be one of my biggest idols. It was great to hit balls with him at Indian Wells, and seeing his comeback [last year] was spectacular, so I’m happy for him.”

Maybe Del Potro should think about idolizing Tiafoe after their battle last night in Acapulco. Tiafoe played extraordinary tennis to push the Tower of Tandil all the way to a third set tiebreaker, and when it was finally over, Del Potro had some nice words for Tiafoe at the net.

Del Potro advances with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1) win to face Novak Djokovic on Wednesday in Acapulco. For Tiafoe it was an excruciating near miss, but it is one he will certainly remember fondly.
