Zverev Denies Reports that He Used Meldonium

A story posted in the publication Alo.RS, quoted former German Davis Cup captain Niki Pilic as saying that Alexander Zverev had used the medication meldonium for diabetes. The 18-year-old German denied that report on Friday at Indian Wells.

The website tennisworldusa.org had previously translated the article into English.

Zverev was asked about the article on Friday during his press conference after a first-round win over Ivan Dodig.

“I have absolutely no idea what Meldonium is,” he said. “I honestly never took it. I do not know where that is even coming from. I have no idea what that substance even is, and everything that has been there [in the article] is absolutely not true.”

The German added: “I am getting tested with doping, you know, almost every week, so, you know, if I would be taking that substance which is not allowed, there would be bigger news than just that little article.”

He was asked by a journalist if he had diabetes, as Pilic’s quote had mentioned.

“Everything that is in it that [article] is not true,” he said. “Everything that is in that news is absolutely, you know, made up.”
